While traditional techniques were employed to give advice on particular aspects, it was decided to use mainly a multispecific approach gathering the available data on trophic interactions in the lagoon and analyzing them in a quantitative context. Data on catch composition, length distributions, diets, were collected on a half month basis and combined with information from other research allowed us to construct a simple steady-state box model for the lagoon as an alternative to the complex data intensive ecosystem models. The ECOPATH II model has been chosen because of its versatility. In fact, the model leaves out the time dimension which is determinant in other data intensive models. The approach is an analytical procedure to estimate a biomass budget for a box model of an ecosystem, specifying as input the ecosystem components or groups and the model produces estimates of annual mean biomass, production and consumption of the user specified groups. Each group is composed of a single species, size/age groups of a single species or an aggregation of species with similar diets and life history characteristics. The model is composed of 16 boxes, namely cormorants, eels, sea bass who stand on the top of the trophic web. In the intermediate level there are sea breams, soles, mugilids and small foraging fish. The model includes boxes also for benthic producers, phytoplankton, zooplankton and detritus.</style></abstract><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">3018936</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Conference 6.
